Ondo State Greenlights Major Flyover, Road and Dam Projects to Boost Infrastructure

3rd June, 2026 Akure, Ondo State

The Ondo State Government has approved a series of transformative infrastructure projects, including a 2.38-kilometre flyover bridge in Akure, multiple road constructions across the state, and the rehabilitation of the Owena Dam, signaling a major push to enhance mobility, water supply, and urban development.
The decision was announced following the Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa on Tuesday.
The flyover, set for the Oba Adesida Road corridor from Adegbola Junction to St Mattias/NNPC Filling Station at Alagbaka, was recommended after traffic studies identified persistent congestion along the Alagbaka–Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) route as a significant bottleneck. Engr. Abiola Olawoye, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, said preliminary surveys will commence soon ahead of construction.
“This flyover is a critical intervention to ease traffic flow in Akure, particularly along one of the state’s busiest corridors,” Olawoye stated.
Beyond Akure, the council approved extensive roadworks across the state. Key projects include the canalisation of a 40-kilometre main canal from Ugbonla to Awoye with a spur to Idi Ogba in Ilaje Local Government Area, concrete walkways in Obenla and Idiogba communities, and major road projects in Irele, Akure, Owo, Ondo East, Ifedore, Idanre, Odigbo, and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo local government areas.
Notable road rehabilitation and construction projects include:
Ayedun–Akure/Owo Expressway (rehabilitation and asphalt overlay)
Oba–Ikun–Afo–Idoani Road
Arigidi–Oke Agbe Road
Irele–Sabomi–Igbotu Road
Access and internal roads at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences
The council also approved the upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, to the University of Agricultural Science and Technology, Owo, aimed at meeting growing demand for higher education in agriculture, science, technology, and engineering.
In the health sector, the Executive Council sanctioned procurement of advanced radiodiagnostic and specialized equipment for the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo. This includes MRI, CT scan, 4D ultrasound, mammography, and digital X-ray machines, enhancing both healthcare delivery and medical training.
Water infrastructure received a boost with the approval of counterpart funding for the rehabilitation of the multipurpose Owena Dam. About 40% completed, the project is supported by the World Bank, African Development Bank, and French Development Bank, and is expected to significantly improve potable water supply, sanitation, and public health in Akure and neighboring areas.
Governor Aiyedatiwa described the approvals as a “strategic roadmap for sustainable development,” emphasizing that the projects are aimed at improving the quality of life, economic productivity, and social wellbeing of residents.
