Ayetoro, the coastal community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State that has become a symbol of the devastating effects of climate change, will host this year’s World Environment Day commemoration as the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) intensifies calls for urgent action to address environmental threats confronting riverine communities.
The event, scheduled for Friday, June 5, 2026, is being organized by OSOPADEC in partnership with the Ondo State Ministry of Environment under the theme: “Climate Resilience Action: Mobilizing Urgent Responses to the Ocean Climate Crisis in Ondo State Riverine Communities.”
The Executive Chairman of OSOPADEC, Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, will lead the Commission’s delegation to Ayetoro, where he is expected to reiterate the agency’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability, strengthening climate resilience, and protecting vulnerable coastal settlements within the Commission’s mandate areas.
According to the Commission, the programme will draw attention to the worsening impact of climate change, including rising sea levels, persistent coastal erosion, flooding, and ocean encroachment that continue to threaten lives, livelihoods, homes, and critical infrastructure across Ondo State’s oil-producing communities.
Ayetoro remains one of the hardest-hit communities, with large portions of its land already lost to the Atlantic Ocean. The community’s struggle reflects the broader challenges facing several riverine settlements where residents grapple daily with displacement, environmental degradation, and growing uncertainty about the future.
As part of activities marking the global observance, OSOPADEC is urging governments at all levels, development partners, international organizations, environmental advocates, private sector stakeholders, and community leaders to work together in tackling the climate crisis, which it described as a major threat to sustainable development in the Niger Delta region.
The Commission reaffirmed its resolve to champion climate resilience programmes, environmental protection initiatives, coastal defense measures, and strategic interventions aimed at safeguarding vulnerable communities and ensuring a more secure future for coming generations.
“The ocean is advancing. Communities are disappearing. The time to act is now.”
