An ex-student of Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, Mr. Bankole Falowo, who is the Chairman of the Planning Committee for the 30-year reunion celebration of the 1996 set, said they are very grateful because they are alive. He said the set has lost fifteen of its members even before the reunion celebration. According to him, ten students were given scholarships to continue their education. He said the amount given to those students would not be announced due to security reasons. He explained that the occasion was an opportunity for them to remember some of their colleagues who had passed away and that they were supporting the children they left behind with little assistance.
In another development, Mr. Bankole said they are grateful that they could still come together to celebrate. He explained that Prof. Olayinka Erin had done justice to the symposium lecture titled Education is a Scam: The Way Forward. He was of the opinion that education was not a scam, but that the entire paradigm needs to change, as people have to do more than rely on their certificates in order to get a job. He emphasized what Prof. Erin said about the importance of good communication skills, which education ought to develop strongly if people want to soar higher in their careers. He also used the opportunity to roll out the programme as planned, including a novelty football match and other entertaining activities that would make members of the set happy once again as the reunion celebration continues, while discussions about the health of members would also be a memorable moment among them.
