The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Hon. Ifabiyi Samuel, said the impeachment crisis rocking the Ondo State House of Assembly over the removal of the Speaker, Hon. Olamide Oladiji, is still awaiting the resolution of the leadership of the party.
Hon. Ifabiyi disclosed this to journalists when he was asked if the lawmakers had backed down from carrying out the impeachment. He said, “We are still waiting for the leadership of the party. We cannot proceed further until the party leadership reaches a resolution because the position of the members is still pending. We are waiting for the party leadership to invite us and give us further instructions.”
He explained that the matter was still ongoing.
According to him, the government does not intervene in the affairs of the legislature. “The government does not interfere in the affairs of the legislature.”
Hon. Ifabiyi further explained that, “It is normal for the party to intervene because we are members of the same political family. APC has the majority in the Ondo State House of Assembly. Since the party controls the House, it is only proper for the party leadership to call its members together and resolve any crisis that may arise.”
Similarly, the spokesperson led journalists through the resolutions of the parliamentary meeting, saying, “The resolution of the House today borders on the fact that it has long been overdue for a parliamentary meeting. We thank God for the leadership of the House and my brother, Hon. Olamide Oladiji, who gave me the opportunity to call for this parliamentary meeting.”
He said, “You have been hearing from the masses that the House has not sat for a number of days. There were days when we ought to have held parliamentary committee meetings in a plenary setting. For us not to shy away from our responsibility as legislators in making laws, we are here today and we have successfully held our meeting.”
He went further that the resolution reached bordered on the development of Ondo State. “A lot of issues were discussed and thoroughly considered. As Honourable Members, we discussed matters relating to the development of our constituencies, constituency projects, and other issues that concern the progress of our communities. We also discussed flooding. If you observe very well in the riverine areas where we came from, there are serious flooding issues affecting the lives of our people. We passed a resolution on the matter.”
He stated that the House had directed all the relevant agencies concerned with flood control in the state to appear before the relevant House committee for a meeting. “We have invited all the relevant agencies. Some attended today’s meeting, while those who could not attend have given us another date to appear before us. At the end of the day, we have scheduled another meeting in about two weeks. We have also directed all committee chairmen to resume their normal committee sittings so they can carry out their oversight functions effectively.”
Ifabiyi Samuel Olatunji, member representing Odigbo Constituency I and Chairman of the House Committee on Information, denied allegations that money was exchanged with higher authorities in the party to convene the meeting, saying, “That is completely false. A capital no. If you observe very well, we are mature people, not babies. Whatever course of action we begin, we will see it through to the end.”
