Ogunyemi Meets NURTW Leaders, Seeks Stronger Collaboration on Road Safety
The Ondo State Government has called for closer collaboration with commercial transport operators as part of efforts to improve road safety, strengthen compliance and promote a more orderly transportation system across the state.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transport, Hon. Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi ÈYÍYÀTÒ, made the call during a strategic meeting with the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ondo State Chapter, led by its State Chairman, Comrade Ademola Odudu, and members of the union’s executive council.
Ogunyemi said transport unions have an important role to play in ensuring that government policies, traffic regulations and transportation directives are properly communicated and implemented among operators.
He urged the NURTW leadership to support efforts aimed at promoting discipline and safety within the sector, stressing the need for commercial drivers to observe traffic regulations and show greater consideration for other road users.
The Special Adviser also cautioned operators against reckless driving, indiscriminate parking, obstruction of traffic and other practices that could endanger lives or disrupt the movement of people and goods.
According to him, transportation reform goes beyond enforcement, as it also requires stakeholders to develop a culture of responsibility and compliance.
He noted that while government has the responsibility to establish regulations and provide policy direction, transport operators and unions must equally contribute to ensuring that the rules are understood and followed at the grassroots.
Responding, the NURTW State Chairman, Comrade Ademola Odudu, appreciated Ogunyemi for the engagement and congratulated him on his appointment.
Odudu stressed the importance of sustained dialogue between the government and transport operators, saying continued engagement would help address challenges within the transportation sector and promote effective implementation of government policies.
He pledged the cooperation of the union and assured the Ministry of Transport that the union would use its structures to disseminate government directives and sensitisation messages to its members across the state.
Also speaking, the Director of Transport Operations, Mr. E.T. Adeyeye, commended the NURTW leadership for its cooperation and urged the union to maintain its partnership with the Ministry in promoting discipline and compliance among transport operators.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Mr. Tope Lebile, expressed appreciation to the NURTW leadership for responding to the Ministry’s invitation despite the short notice.
The meeting provided an avenue for government officials and transport stakeholders to discuss ways of improving cooperation, road safety and compliance within the state’s transport sector.
Ogunyemi said the administration remained committed to working with relevant stakeholders toward a transportation system that is safer, more orderly and more efficient for residents and commuters across Ondo State.
