By Exponent News, Akure | May 21, 2025

In a major legislative move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural education and research sector, the House of Representatives will hold a public hearing on eleven critical bills that seek to establish new institutions and bolster agricultural innovation across the country.

Organized by the House Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, the hearing is scheduled for Monday, May 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., in Conference Room 023, House of Representatives New Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Isiaq Abiodun Akinlade, highlighted the strategic importance of the legislative effort. “This hearing demonstrates the House’s commitment to inclusive and transformative lawmaking that prioritises food security, skills development, institutional strengthening, and research innovation within the agricultural education sector. We are ensuring that legislative actions align with national goals in agriculture, education, and rural development,” he stated.

The eleven bills up for public scrutiny propose the creation of a diverse range of agricultural institutions including universities, colleges, and research institutes, each designed to address regional and sectoral needs in Nigeria’s agriculture landscape.

The bills include proposals for the establishment of:

  1. Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Rabah, Sokoto State
  2. Federal College of Agriculture and Forestry, Oban Akamkpa, Cross River State
  3. National Institute for Agricultural Research and Entrepreneurship, Owode, Yewa, Ogun State
  4. Federal College of Agriculture, Igbeti, Oyo State
  5. Federal College of Agriculture, Urhonigbe, Edo State
  6. Fisheries and Aquatic Studies Research Institute, Darki, Wudil, Kano State
  7. National Bamboo Research and Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Umuogba Omuma, Rivers State
  8. Federal College of Agriculture and Vocational Studies, Ogbia Town, Bayelsa State
  9. Federal University of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology, Igbo-Ora, Oyo State
  10. Federal Colleges of Fisheries and Agriculture
  11. Federal University of Agriculture, Akure, Ondo State

Stakeholders, professionals in agriculture and education, civil society organizations, and the general public are invited to attend and actively participate in the hearing. Their contributions are expected to shape the legislative outcomes and ensure that the new institutions meet national development goals.

The House reaffirmed its dedication to open and participatory governance, noting that public engagement remains central to achieving effective, people-centered legislation.
