EFCC, Varsity VCs Collaborate to Tackle Corruption in Nigerian Universities
By Exponent News, Akure | 22nd May 2025

In a significant step toward institutional reform and anti-corruption education, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) have agreed to explore strategic partnerships aimed at fostering transparency and strengthening integrity in Nigeria’s higher education system.

The collaboration was the highlight of a courtesy visit by the Secretary-General of CVCNU, Professor Andrew Haruna, to the EFCC’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

Describing the engagement as “both timely and strategic,” Haruna emphasized that the meeting opened a platform for constructive dialogue rooted in shared values of accountability, transparency, and national development.

“Universities, as centres of knowledge and character development, have a vital role in shaping a corruption-free future,” Haruna stated. “Likewise, the EFCC, as the nation’s foremost anti-graft body, carries the crucial mandate of promoting integrity across sectors, including education.”

Haruna outlined potential areas of collaboration, including institutional integrity reinforcement, anti-corruption awareness campaigns, capacity building, collaborative research, and whistle-blower support mechanisms within tertiary institutions.

He emphasized the importance of training university administrators before they assume top leadership roles. “Before professors become vice-chancellors, they need to understand what it means to manage public resources and lead complex institutions. This is where EFCC’s experience becomes invaluable. We can’t afford to have leaders claiming ignorance when accountability fails,” he said.

Haruna called for the EFCC’s assistance in providing experts to lead seminars, lectures, and training sessions for university leaders—especially in procurement procedures, financial compliance, and institutional risk management.

He also proposed research partnerships and data-driven policy work targeting corruption in higher education, public finance management, and broader governance frameworks. Haruna stressed the need for safe whistle-blower mechanisms that would foster internal reporting and transparency within campuses.

“This partnership, once formalized, will not only strengthen the governance structures of our universities but will also contribute significantly to national development,” he noted. Haruna praised the EFCC’s leadership under Mr. Ola Olukoyede, calling it visionary and tireless in the fight against corruption.

In his response, EFCC Chairman Olukoyede welcomed the initiative, calling the proposed collaboration both timely and necessary.

“I thank you for extending this hand of collaboration,” he said. “Our universities play a critical role in building the future of Nigeria. Together, we can prevent corruption at the source and build a generation of ethically grounded leaders.”

Olukoyede revealed that the EFCC Academy, which currently promotes anti-corruption education, is pursuing full accreditation for its degree, diploma, and certificate programs. He proposed a joint development of anti-corruption curricula and the integration of such content into university programs.

“We need your support in recommending visiting professors and helping us build our faculty,” he added, highlighting the need for an enriched academic partnership.

The EFCC boss also suggested the formation of a joint committee between the Commission and the CVCNU to develop a fraud risk assessment framework tailored for Nigerian universities.

The meeting concluded with optimism on both sides, signaling a bold and proactive shift toward rooting out corruption from one of the country’s most influential sectors.
