Reps Recover ₦61.5bn from Oil, Gas Firms as 10th Assembly Closes Second Session

By Exponent News, Akure | June 13, 2025

The House of Representatives has announced the recovery of over ₦61.5 billion owed to the federal government by oil and gas companies, marking a significant achievement as it concludes the Second Legislative Session of the 10th National Assembly.

This milestone was disclosed in a midterm press statement issued by the Office of the House Spokesman on Friday in Abuja, highlighting sweeping reforms, robust legislative interventions, and a renewed commitment to public accountability over the past two years.

Since its inauguration on June 13, 2023, the 10th House—under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON—has pursued its constitutional mandate guided by an ambitious 8-Point Legislative Agenda. According to the report, 2,263 bills were reviewed, with 186 passed and 51 signed into law—an unprecedented figure for any administration’s first two years in office.

Oversight activities were also a major focus. Through the Public Accounts Committee, the House successfully recovered ₦61.5 billion from defaulting oil and gas operators, reinforcing its resolve to promote fiscal discipline and transparency in national revenue flows.

Other achievements include:

Passage of 87 constitutional amendment bills through Second Reading.

Consideration of 1,100 motions addressing urgent national concerns.

Increased national security budget allocation to ₦6.11 trillion, or 11.1% of the 2025 budget.

Progressive economic reforms, including subsidy removal and FX unification.

Expansion of education and healthcare funding, with a notable increase in social protection programs.

Speaker Tajudeen described the 10th House as a “laboratory of reform” and “a platform for results,” citing record-setting legislative output and expanded citizen engagement through town halls and televised sessions.

The House also demonstrated social responsibility by donating ₦705 million—half of members’ salaries over six months—to the President’s relief initiative, in addition to ₦650 million for housing the families of deceased lawmakers and ₦500 million for internally displaced persons.

Looking ahead, the House will host its Legislative Open Week in July, themed “Two Years in the People’s House”, to present its Midterm Scorecard and further deepen legislative transparency and civic engagement.

Speaker Tajudeen reaffirmed the commitment of the 10th Assembly to “national unity, inclusion, and economic transformation” as it prepares to enter its Third Legislative Session.
