As the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) marked its 25th anniversary with a Thanksgiving Service in Akure, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing the welfare of oil-producing communities in the state.

Speaking at the event held at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Akure, the Governor hailed the NDDC for its developmental contributions over the last two and a half decades, especially in the Niger Delta region. He praised the agency’s leadership and expressed gratitude that the commemorative service was hosted in the Ondo State capital.

“We the good people of Ondo State, particularly those in the oil-producing areas of Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas, acknowledge the Commission’s works, achievements, and contributions to the development of the Niger Delta region in the last 25 years,” Aiyedatiwa stated.

The governor also recalled his own stint as an NDDC board member between 2018 and 2019, noting his pride in contributing to the Commission’s mission. He particularly acknowledged the roles of Ondo State’s representatives on the NDDC Board, describing their impact as significant and beneficial.

Highlighting his administration’s efforts at the state level, Governor Aiyedatiwa drew attention to the reform and revitalization of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), which, according to him, has driven real progress in health, education, and infrastructure in oil-rich areas.

“Through OSOPADEC, we have implemented projects that have improved the lives of our people, enhanced our environment, and promoted economic growth,” he said. “Our people are beginning to reap the benefits of oil exploration, and we are committed to ensuring that our environment is protected for future generations.”

The Governor also extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for Niger Delta development, commending the President’s leadership in promoting accountability within the NDDC. He encouraged the Commission to continue aligning its projects with the actual needs of host communities.

“Let us work together to unlock the potential of our region, promote economic growth, and enhance the lives of our people,” he urged, stressing the importance of synergy between the NDDC and state-level institutions.

Delivering a soul-searching sermon at the thanksgiving service, the Bishop of Akure Anglican Diocese, Rt. Revd. Dr. Simon Oluwole Borokini, charged public office holders to remember their divine accountability, saying, “Every man, regardless of title, will one day bow before God, the perfect judge who knows all. The real question is: how are you using the position He has given you?”

On his part, the NDDC Managing Director/CEO, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, spoke about the agency’s track record of service and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and result-driven development.

The silver jubilee celebration continued with a reception at the International Culture and Events Centre (The Dome), attended by top government officials, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and stakeholders from across the Niger Delta.
