Tensions flared in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, following a violent altercation between local farmers and Fulani herders over alleged farmland encroachment, leading to an incident of attempted murder.
According to a report filed at the Akungba Police Division, a farmer raised alarm when Fulani herders reportedly invaded his farmland at Eluju, Iberi, sparking a heated confrontation. In a bid to disperse the herders, a local hunter was invited to the scene for assistance.
However, in the ensuing chaos, the hunter’s Dane gun accidentally discharged, striking a 20-year-old youth identified as Suleiman, believed to be one of the herders’ aides. Suleiman was immediately rushed to a hospital in Ikare, where medical personnel confirmed he was responding positively to treatment.
Law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene documented photographic evidence while detaining those involved for questioning. The police confirmed that efforts are underway to recover the firearm used in the incident and to carry out a comprehensive crime scene documentation.
