TWO YEARS OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION: MINISTER TIJANI HIGHLIGHTS MILESTONES IN COMMUNICATIONS AND INNOVATION SECTOR

By Exponent News – Abuja, August 25, 2025

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has declared that the country is on a solid path to digital transformation, citing landmark achievements in tech talent development, rural connectivity, artificial intelligence, and innovation hubs within just two years of his tenure.

Speaking in a special statement to Nigerians, Dr. Tijani expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for entrusting him with the responsibility to lead the sector, describing it as the “highest honour” of his life.

According to him, a blueprint was set at the beginning of his administration — a social contract aimed at building a digital economy that drives prosperity and opportunity for all Nigerians.

“In two years, we have trained 125,000 young Nigerians under the 3MTT Programme, while another 225,000 citizens gained digital literacy skills to thrive in today’s economy. Through programmes such as the Build-a-thon for secondary schools and Girls in ICT, we are seeing the brilliance of our young people, especially women, shaping the future,” he stated.

Highlighting progress in the telecoms sector, Tijani said connectivity remains the lifeline of a modern society.

With Project BRIDGE, the Ministry is deploying 90,000km of fibre optic cable to reach every state, local government, and ward.

Project 774 is leveraging NigComSat satellites to connect all local government secretariats nationwide.

The Fibre to Hostels Initiative is expanding high-speed internet access to students across the country.

He also revealed that rural connectivity was piloted in Kura community, Abuja, as part of plans to roll out 7,000 new telecom towers that will connect 20 million Nigerians in underserved areas.

On digital innovation, the Minister noted investments in the Digital Innovation Park in Kano and over a hundred computer facilities nationwide, giving young people access to tools and platforms for creativity. Nigeria, he added, is also positioning itself as a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with 45 AI startups funded and 10 demonstration projects supported in key sectors such as agriculture, health, security, and education.

“Our work also retools government itself. Through DevsInGovernment, civil servants are learning digital skills to serve better. With Digital Public Infrastructure, critical services such as passports, licenses, and business registrations will soon be more seamless and transparent,” he explained.

The Minister further disclosed reforms to modernize NIPOST into a hub for e-commerce, agro-logistics, digital banking, and nationwide delivery.

He emphasized that these milestones were made possible by the partnership of the private sector, support from the National Assembly, and the resilience of Nigerians. Looking ahead, he pledged continued focus on data protection, AI leadership, global market access for Nigerian startups, and stronger representation for Nigeria in shaping the digital future.

“My fellow Nigerians, serving you has been the greatest privilege of my life. The work is far from done, but every day convinces me that our best days are ahead — together,” Tijani said, while specially thanking President Tinubu for his support and vision.
