Aiyedatiwa Commends FG, DSS Over Owo Attack Prosecution, Pledges Justice for Victims

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to securing justice for victims of the June 5, 2022 Owo Catholic Church massacre, while hailing the Federal Government and the Department of State Services (DSS) for prosecuting suspects linked to the tragic attack.

Speaking on Saturday at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Akure, during the 15th Episcopal Anniversary and 35th Priestly Ordination Anniversary of the Bishop of Ondo Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Jude Ayodeji Arogundade, the Governor said security remains a top priority of his government.

Aiyedatiwa, who described Bishop Arogundade as a beacon of hope and justice, praised the Catholic Church for its immense contributions to education, healthcare, and social development in the state. He also disclosed that his administration has procured 75 Hilux vehicles fitted with modern security gadgets to further strengthen security operations, in addition to monthly logistical support for security agencies.

He recalled with grief the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, where about 40 worshippers were killed and many others injured, stressing that the scars of the massacre still linger. He, however, noted that the DSS is already prosecuting key suspects arrested in connection with the incident, including Idris Omeiza, Al-Quasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar.

“We pray that the memories of the Owo victims be blessed forever. As we continue to seek justice for them, let us stand together against terror and other forms of criminalities. In unity and love, we will find strength to heal, mend broken hearts, and ensure a safer Sunshine State,” the Governor declared.

In his remarks, Bishop Arogundade expressed gratitude for the return of missionary schools to the church and pledged commitment to providing quality education built on sound moral values. He also reflected on his 35 years of priesthood and 15 years as Bishop, urging newly ordained priests to remain steadfast in their service to God and humanity.

The Governor later joined other dignitaries to unveil the church’s new multipurpose hall after the ceremony.
