Igoba Community Shaken as 10 Suspects Arraigned for Attack, Attempted Assassination of Monarch

Admin. 7th October, 2025

Tension gripped the Igoba community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State after a violent assault on the town and a failed assassination attempt on the traditional ruler, Oba Adinlewa John. Following the attack, ten suspects have now been arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Akure.

The accused — Seun Bankole (46), Alo Tolulope (32), Kolawole Kazeem (35), Seriki Lateef (35), Bankole Tobi (25), Sunday Amigun (32), Ayodele Saka (34), Adedayo Ogidan (43), Olaoluwa Kayode (26), and Ezekiel Vincent (31) — face charges including illegal possession of firearms, dangerous weapons, and attempted assassination.

According to the Ondo State Police Command, the suspects launched the attack on Thursday, October 2, 2025, around 11:30 a.m., wielding locally fabricated pistols, a single-barrel gun, live ammunition, knives, machetes, charms, and other weapons, leaving residents in panic.

During the attack, a resident, Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo, sustained serious injuries and was robbed of her belongings. The assailants also targeted the palace of Oba Adinlewa John but failed to kill the monarch, who narrowly escaped.

In response to the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, deployed a tactical team under the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations), leading to the arrest of the suspects who have confessed to their roles in the violence.

Magistrate Damilola Sekoni ordered the suspects to be transferred to the Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit for proper legal preparation. The case is set to continue on Friday, October 10, 2025.

The Ondo State Police Command has reassured the public that peace has been restored to Igoba, with increased security presence to prevent further disturbances. Commissioner Lawal warned that anyone involved in violent acts will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
