FUTA Elevates Academic Excellence as 240 Students Earn First Class at 36th Convocation

Date: 8th November ,| Akure

In a resounding affirmation of its academic excellence, the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has announced that 240 students have bagged First Class honours among the 3,614 graduates set to receive degrees during its 36th Convocation Ceremony scheduled for November 7–14, 2025.

At a press briefing heralding the convocation, Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, highlighted the institution’s rapid strides in research, innovation, and global partnerships, declaring that FUTA’s vision of global relevance in science and technology education “has become a lived reality.”

According to her, the graduating cohort comprises 2,747 undergraduates and 867 postgraduates. The breakdown shows 1,479 Second Class Upper, 912 Second Class Lower, and 116 Third Class degrees, while the postgraduate list includes 627 Master of Technology (M.Tech), 86 Postgraduate Diplomas, and 154 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) awardees.

Professor Oladiji reaffirmed FUTA’s position as Nigeria’s premier University of Technology, citing the institution’s recent milestones—ranging from the establishment of a teaching hospital to the introduction of new programmes in nursing, digital technologies, fintech, environmental sciences, and renewable energy.

“We are not only producing graduates; we are producing innovators and job creators,” she said. “Every 300-level student now undertakes entrepreneurship training, and some already execute professional projects both on and off campus.”

The Vice Chancellor further disclosed that FUTA’s impact is being felt globally through collaborative research efforts, including projects on bioethanol development, hydrocarbon exploration, and the Space-based Flood Awareness System for Africa, funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

FUTA’s researchers and students continue to garner international accolades. In early 2025, a team led by Professor Joseph Ojo emerged as Africa’s only representative in the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Student Grand Challenge, while Professor Matthew Ayorinde Adebayo received the Nigerian Academy of Science Gold Medal Award for 2024.

Oladiji also commended the Federal Government for recent interventions, including ₦1 billion TETFund support for modernising the university’s commercial farm and the Energise Programme, which is delivering a large-scale solar power plant to boost research activities.

Highlighting FUTA’s growing influence, the VC praised ongoing partnerships with institutions such as the University of Connecticut (USA) and the FUTA Alumni North America (FUTANA) network, noting that staff welfare and student excellence remain the institution’s top priorities.

“Our journey is one of transformation — from a local hub of learning to a global centre of innovation,” she said. “The achievements of our staff, students, and alumni speak volumes of what FUTA stands for.”
