A new chapter in women’s sports development was written in Akure at the weekend as Sunshine Queens FC of Ondo State emerged champions of the maiden edition of the Ondo State First Lady’s Pre-Season Tournament for Women’s Football Teams, defeating Fortress Ladies of Benin 1–0 in a thrilling final at the Akure Township Stadium.

The Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, described the initiative as a visionary step by the First Lady, Her Excellency, Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, toward empowering women and promoting inclusion through sports.

Speaking at the grand finale, Poroye commended Mrs. Aiyedatiwa for her foresight and commitment, noting that the tournament has successfully unearthed new talents and strengthened women’s participation in football across the country.

“Though this is the first edition of the football event, it has set a very high standard in all ramifications. The game was not only entertaining but strongly competitive. The players have shown courage, character, resilience, and great potential for the future,” Poroye stated.

He explained that the initiative aligns with the ongoing efforts of the Aiyedatiwa-led administration to promote opportunities and discover talents in Ondo State, particularly in sports and youth development.

> “Since I came on board as OSOPADEC Chairman, one of my key priorities has been to lay a lasting foundation for enduring growth. What we witnessed here today is exactly the kind of empowerment we hope to replicate in our mandate areas,” he added.

The atmosphere at the Akure Township Stadium was electric as Sunshine Queens edged past Fortress Ladies in a tightly contested encounter. The lone goal sealed victory for the home side and sent the crowd into wild celebration as the final whistle blew.

In a symbolic moment, Prince Poroye decorated the Ondo First Lady with a gold medal, describing her as “the pillar behind this successful sports initiative.” In turn, the Chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Mr. Divine Ogbonnaya, presented a gold medal to Poroye in appreciation of his support throughout the tournament.

The competition, which featured women’s teams from different parts of Nigeria, has drawn praise from sports enthusiasts and administrators alike for its organization, competitiveness, and vision. Observers say the tournament could become a major platform for nurturing future stars in Nigerian women’s foot

In summary, Sunshine Queens FC of Akure have won the maiden Ondo State First Lady’s Women’s Football Tournament, defeating Fortress Ladies 1–0. OSOPADEC Chairman Prince Olabiyi Poroye hailed Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa’s vision for women’s empowerment through sports.
