Final Judgement: UNIMED Registrar Died of Natural Causes — Coroner Rules
‎
‎Date: December ,14th ,2025
‎
‎By Exponent News Akure
‎
‎A coroner’s inquest presided over by Dr. Dickson Ogunfuyi has concluded that Mr. Imole Ayo Adeniran, the Registrar of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Akure, died a natural death, based on the examination of all evidences presented, despite earlier allegations from family members suggesting he may have been forced to ingest poison shortly before his collapse.
‎
‎The inquiry was convened to examine the sudden and unexpected death of Mr. Adeniran, who slumped at his residence in Akure on 16 July 2025 and was later pronounced dead at the Police Clinic, Akure. Concerns were raised after the deceased reportedly made utterances claiming he had been compelled to drink a harmful substance.
‎
‎The inquest reviewed testimony from medical personnel, including Dr. Pelemo, Olumuyiwa , the consultant pathologist who conducted the autopsy and toxicology tests, as well as statements from the deceased’s driver, family members, institutional witnesses, and investigating officers.
‎
‎The scope of the inquiry, conducted under the Ondo State Coroner’s Law, was strictly fact-finding. The coroner outlined issues for determination, including:
‎
‎1. The identity of the deceased.
‎
‎2. The circumstances of the death.
‎
‎‎3. The medical cause of death.
‎
‎‎4. Whether poisoning occurred and whether it was accidental, suicidal, or homicidal.
‎
‎‎5. Whether any toxicologically significant substance was found in his system.
‎
‎‎6. Whether clinical symptoms—vomiting, salivation, and alleged insecticide smell—aligned with scientific findings.
‎
‎‎7. Whether any investigative or institutional shortcomings contributed to the incident.
‎
‎‎Medical Observations and Testimony
‎
‎Attending doctors at the Police Clinic testified that the deceased arrived in a state of reduced consciousness, exhibiting vomiting, abdominal pain, high blood pressure, and intermittent muttering that he had been forced to ingest poison. No physical injuries, injection marks, or chemical odours were detected. Emergency treatment was commenced immediately.
‎
‎During a lucid period later that evening, Mr. Adeniran interacted normally with family members and did not repeat any allegations of forced poisoning. He later suffered renewed vomiting, followed by cardiorespiratory arrest, and was pronounced dead around midnight.
‎
‎Driver and Family Accounts
‎
‎The deceased’s driver testified that he discovered Mr. Adeniran lying at the back of the house after repeated calls from an associate. According to him, the deceased mentioned that he had been given poison but said nothing about weapons, violence, or individuals involved. No container, cup, bottle, or evidence of struggle was found at the scene.
‎
‎The deceased’s wife reported seeing him vomit into a nylon bag and confirmed that an old insecticide container was kept in their compound. She also noted unusual disturbances—cut branches and unripe fruits—shortly before the incident.
‎
‎Investigations and Autopsy
‎
‎Police investigators testified that no sign of forced entry, violence, footprints, or disturbance was observed at the residence. A chemical container was collected for examination, and the deceased’s locked phone was retrieved for analysis. Medical reports indicated no visible trauma.
‎‎Dr. Pelemo  Olumuyiwa, the pathologist, conducted the autopsy and toxicology screening. His findings showed no trace of organophosphate or any toxic substance in the deceased’s system. The cause of death was determined to be a natural medical condition, not poisoning.
‎
‎Institutional Testimonies
‎
‎University representatives testified regarding administrative matters unrelated to the cause of death, including internal disputes and pending investigations involving the deceased. These testimonies were considered only for context and not for determining culpability.
‎
‎Coroner’s Final Ruling
‎
‎After reviewing all oral, medical, forensic, and documentary evidence, Dr. Dickson Ogunfuyi ruled that:
‎
‎1. Mr. Imole Ayo Adeniran died a natural death.
‎2. There is no evidence of poisoning—forced or otherwise.
‎3. No toxic substance was detected in his system.
‎4. No sign of assault, struggle, or external interference was found.
‎
‎The court found that the clinical symptoms initially suggesting possible poisoning were consistent with the underlying medical condition identified during the autopsy.
‎
‎The coroner emphasized the importance of timely medical investigation, proper documentation, and clear communication among institutions to prevent future misunderstandings of the sudden death.
