Nigerians are facing intensified economic pressure as soaring global oil prices—driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East—push up fuel costs and worsen the cost-of-living crisis, even as higher crude earnings boost government revenue.
Recent developments in the international market saw crude oil prices climb above $113 per barrel, a surge linked to uncertainties surrounding U.S.–Iran relations and disruptions around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil supply route. While the price spike presents a revenue windfall for oil-producing countries like Nigeria, its domestic impact has been sharply felt through rising fuel prices, now averaging between ₦1,200 and ₦1,250 per litre in major cities such as Lagos.
Economic analysts warn that the gains from higher oil prices may be offset by growing fiscal risks, including a rising debt burden and inflationary pressures that continue to erode household incomes. The situation has left many Nigerians grappling with higher transportation, food, and energy costs.
Speaking during a televised discussion, economist Professor Biodun Adedipe explained that global disruptions—particularly around oil and energy supply chains—have far-reaching implications. He noted that blockages or instability in key supply routes could affect up to 30 percent of global crude oil, fertilizer, and energy distribution, triggering widespread economic consequences.
Adedipe highlighted that countries respond differently to such shocks depending on their resilience, energy independence, and financial buffers. While Nigeria has relatively strong external reserves, he argued that the country’s continued reliance on imported refined petroleum products leaves it vulnerable to global price fluctuations.
He emphasized the need for strategic domestic policies, including supplying crude oil to local refineries at discounted rates to stabilize fuel prices. Such measures, he said, could help shield citizens from the volatility of international markets.
Similarly, chartered accountant and public affairs analyst Odusesan Okunade stressed the importance of prioritizing domestic economic needs over global market considerations. He argued that despite increased revenues from crude exports, many Nigerians are not experiencing corresponding improvements in their standard of living.
Okuade called for stronger government intervention to ensure that local refining capacity meets domestic demand at affordable prices. He also urged authorities to invest more in agriculture and local production to reduce dependence on imported goods, particularly fertilizers affected by global supply disruptions.
Both experts pointed to a disconnect between macroeconomic gains at the federal level and the lived realities of citizens, attributing part of the problem to inadequate policy implementation at the state level. They noted that while subnational governments now receive increased allocations following fuel subsidy removal, the impact has yet to translate into tangible benefits for the populace.
The analysts further called for greater transparency and accountability in public spending, urging state governments to open their books and demonstrate how increased revenues are being utilized to improve infrastructure, security, and social services.
As global uncertainties persist, the consensus among experts is clear: without deliberate efforts to strengthen domestic capacity and ensure effective governance, Nigeria risks missing the opportunity to turn external economic shocks into sustainable national gains.

Police Nab Fake Midwife, Prophetess Over Suspected Maternal Deaths in Ondo The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two suspects, including a self-acclaimed midwife and a prophetess, in connection with separate cases of alleged maternal and infant deaths in Akure and Emure-Ile. According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the arrests followed tragic incidents recorded under suspicious circumstances in both locations. In the first case, reported on April 16, 2026, a woman identified as Mrs. Bawa Blessing reportedly died after going into labour at a private residence in the Gloryland area of Akure. The residence, said to belong to one Elizabeth Aremu, who allegedly posed as a midwife, became the scene of the tragedy after the victim developed complications shortly after delivery and died before she could be moved to a hospital. Police detectives who visited the location discovered the lifeless body of a newborn wrapped in a sack. The suspect was subsequently arrested. In a separate incident reported on April 11, 2026, a 20-year-old woman, Genifer Sunday, was taken to a church in Emure-Ile during labour. The church’s prophetess, identified as Blessing Efiong, allegedly handled the delivery. The newborn reportedly died at the scene, while the mother later died en route to a hospital after developing complications. The prophetess has also been taken into custody. The police said the remains of the deceased mothers and their infants have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, and the Federal Medical Centre morgue for preservation and autopsy. The Command assured that comprehensive investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of the deaths and to ensure that anyone found culpable faces prosecution. It also cautioned the public against seeking medical care from unqualified individuals, stressing the importance of using licensed healthcare facilities, particularly for critical procedures such as childbirth. The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while appreciating the support and leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies as efforts continue to curb criminal practices across the state.
