Experts Call for Humility, Institutional Strength in Political Leadership

Admin.23rd April, 2026

Stakeholders have stressed the need for humility, strong institutions, and deliberate leadership development to improve governance and political effectiveness.
Speaking during a leadership-focused programme, participants noted that individual brilliance alone is insufficient to sustain success without influence within the broader social and political system. They argued that achievements built over time can easily be undermined if leaders fail to engage effectively with institutional structures and the political environment.
The discussants emphasized that while the private sector boasts highly skilled professionals, transitioning into political leadership requires a different set of values—chief among them humility. According to them, political leaders must avoid elitist attitudes and instead recognize the diverse nature of the political space.
They further observed that politics operates similarly across countries such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, with the key distinction being the strength of institutions. As such, building resilient institutions was identified as critical to encouraging more competent individuals to participate in governance, particularly at the grassroots and legislative levels.
Contributors to the discussion also highlighted the growing difficulty of entering the political space, noting that this reality makes leadership development for those already in office even more essential. They maintained that occupying a leadership position comes with the responsibility to demonstrate competence and capacity.
In addition, the conversation touched on recent developments in subnational governance, including the creation of new local council development areas in some states, which participants said could serve as a model for others if properly implemented.
The programme featured insights from academics and leadership consultants, who collectively underscored the importance of nurturing capable leaders and strengthening systems to support effective governance.
