Security operatives in Ondo State have intercepted a suspected child trafficking operation and rescued a 13-year-old girl along the Owena axis, in a joint effort highlighting growing inter-agency collaboration against organised crime.
The Ondo State Police Command  Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, signed the statement issued on April 25, 2026. disclosed that the breakthrough occurred on April 23, 2026, at about 6:44 p.m., when personnel of the Nigerian Army stopped a Toyota Hummer 18-seater commercial bus en route from Lagos to Abuja at the Owena checkpoint. The vehicle, reportedly loaded with waybills, was driven by Akomolafe Tope, 59, alongside a conductor, Sunday Ismaila, 48.
During a search of the vehicle, operatives discovered a teenage girl in the custody of the suspects under circumstances described as suspicious. According to the police, the men failed to provide credible information about the girl’s identity, origin, or intended destination, raising strong concerns of trafficking.
The suspects were immediately arrested, while the minor was taken into protective custody.
Police authorities said the case has been transferred to the Gender-Based Offences Unit for further investigation, adding that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of inquiries.
The Command noted that the operation underscores effective collaboration between the police, the Nigerian Army, and other stakeholders, which has improved intelligence sharing and rapid response to criminal activities.
Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for crimes against children and vulnerable persons, assuring that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
He also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant over their children’s welfare, while advising transport operators to properly verify and document passengers, particularly minors, to avoid aiding criminal acts.
Residents were encouraged to report any suspicious movement involving children to security agencies, as the Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and combating human trafficking across the state.
