Bacterial Meningitis: Sokoto Intensifies Response as Health Expert Urges Early Detection

Health authorities in Sokoto State have intensified efforts to contain the spread of bacterial meningitis following renewed outbreaks recorded in parts of the state, with experts warning residents to seek immediate medical attention once symptoms appear.
Speaking during a national TV programme monitored on Friday day, a medical expert explained that meningitis outbreaks usually occur between November and April, with severe cases often peaking around March and April before the rainy season begins.
The expert noted that Nigeria has battled meningitis outbreaks repeatedly over the years, stressing that immunisation remains one of the most effective preventive measures against the disease.
According to him, pregnant women attending antenatal clinics are regularly educated on the importance of vaccination, while hospitals and health agencies now provide incentives such as food items and financial support to encourage mothers to complete immunisation schedules for their children.
He stated that the current outbreak appears less severe compared to previous years due to improved vaccination campaigns and public health interventions.
The expert identified sudden high fever, severe headache, and neck stiffness as major warning signs of bacterial meningitis, urging residents to report suspected cases to hospitals immediately rather than attributing the illness to spiritual causes.
He further disclosed that the Sokoto State Government has established isolation centres in affected communities, including Dogondaji and Tambuwal axis, with support from humanitarian organisations and medical volunteers responding to outbreak areas.
The medical practitioner also commended the efforts of non-governmental organisations and community groups participating in awareness campaigns and house-to-house immunisation exercises across affected areas.
He, however, expressed concern that misconceptions and delayed diagnosis continue to worsen the spread of the disease, as some residents reportedly resort to traditional concoctions before seeking proper medical treatment.
The expert maintained that early detection and prompt medical intervention remain critical in reducing fatalities associated with bacterial meningitis.
