Two brothers were on Wednesday killed in a tragic road accident involving a diesel tipper truck along Fiwasaye Road, Akure, in front of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) headquarters, triggering tension and outrage among residents and road users in the area.
The victims, who were said to be siblings from the same parents, reportedly died on the spot after the speeding truck rammed into a motorcycle and another vehicle during a busy traffic period caused by a routine stop-and-check operation by VIO officials.
Eyewitnesses said the deceased were riding on a ladies’ motorcycle when the truck lost control and crashed into multiple vehicles and motorcycles along the road.
One of the victims was identified by sympathisers as a fruit seller operating near Showboy Plaza, Alagbaka, while the second victim was said to be his younger brother.
A commercial driver whose vehicle was damaged in the accident escaped unhurt and recounted how the incident threw the area into confusion as residents and motorists scampered for safety.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command said the accident occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday along Fiwasaye Road, Akure.
According to a statement by the police, the crash involved an unregistered diesel tipper truck, a Nissan vehicle with registration number ONDO WWW-327TA driven by one Lawal Basiru Adegoke of Maronu Area, Akure, and an unregistered Mate 90 motorcycle ridden by Emeka Michael, 40, of Oke Ijebu Area, Akure.
The police said preliminary investigation revealed that the tipper truck rammed into the motorcycle and the Nissan vehicle from the rear, leading to the fatal incident.
“Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene where photographs were taken and necessary documentation carried out. The motorcycle rider and his yet-to-be-identified passenger were immediately rushed to the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Akure, where they were both confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty,” the statement said.
The Command also disclosed that some angry youths attempted to attack VIO officials at the scene following the accident, but police officers quickly intervened to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
“The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, while the accidented vehicles and motorcycle have been recovered to the station for safekeeping and further inspection,” the police added.
The Command commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and maintain safe speed limits to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
Police said investigation into the incident is ongoing.
