Ondo Police Launch Crackdown on Covered Number Plates, Unregistered Vehicles
Akure, June 12, 2026

Motorists operating vehicles with covered, defaced, altered or concealed number plates in Ondo State now face intensified enforcement as the Ondo State Police Command has commenced a statewide operation aimed at removing unregistered and unidentifiable vehicles from the roads.
The enforcement exercise, ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, follows a nationwide directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, directing police commands across the country to strengthen enforcement against vehicles operating without proper registration or with tampered identification details.
According to the Command, the operation is designed to enhance public safety, improve crime prevention efforts, and strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies to identify and track vehicles linked to criminal activities.
CP Ohagwu has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders and other officers across the state to ensure strict but professional enforcement of the directive while respecting the fundamental rights of citizens.
The police expressed concern over the growing trend of motorists deliberately concealing, covering, defacing or altering vehicle registration numbers to evade identification. The Command noted that such practices pose significant security risks, as criminal elements often exploit unregistered and unidentifiable vehicles to perpetrate crimes and avoid detection.
Under the ongoing enforcement operation, vehicles found without approved registration number plates, those displaying covered or obscured number plates, and vehicles with altered or defaced registration details will be stopped, sanctioned, impounded where necessary, and subjected to appropriate legal procedures in accordance with existing laws.
The Command urged all vehicle owners and motorists in Ondo State to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and that approved registration numbers are clearly displayed at all times.
“Compliance with vehicle registration regulations is not only a legal obligation but also a critical component of effective policing, intelligence gathering and public safety,” the Command stated.
Residents have also been encouraged to cooperate with officers during the exercise and to report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station.
The Ondo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Inspector-General’s vision of strengthening internal security, preventing crime and ensuring the safety of all residents across the state.
