The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ondo State Command, has arrested a 20-year-old security guard, Oto-Abasi Joseph Etim, over alleged burglary, housebreaking and theft at an apartment in Alagbaka, Akure.
Etim was reportedly arrested in Lagos on August 13, 2026, about three months after he allegedly fled the scene of the incident.
The Command, in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, SC Daniel Aidamenbor, said the incident occurred on May 16, 2026, when the complainant returned home and discovered that the gate and main entrance doors of the apartment were open, while the security guard assigned to the premises was nowhere to be found.
According to the NSCDC, a review of the apartment’s CCTV footage showed the suspect allegedly entering the residence and removing several valuables belonging to the complainant.
Following a petition by the victim, operatives of the Command’s Intelligence Unit commenced an investigation and launched a coordinated tracking operation, which eventually led them to Lagos, where the suspect was apprehended.
During interrogation, Etim allegedly confessed to gaining access to the apartment with a spare key and stealing the valuables, which he later sold to raise money.
Items allegedly stolen included a Samsung A30 mobile phone, Tecno Spark 40 mobile phone, laptop and accessories, Huawei tablet, clothes, cheque book and other personal belongings.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that he sold the phones and tablet at Olukayode Complex in Akure, while the laptop was sold at Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.
The State Commandant, Commandant Oluyemi Joshua Ibiloye, JP, urged members of the public to conduct proper background checks before engaging domestic staff and security personnel.
Ibiloye stressed that adequate profiling and screening of domestic workers and security guards remained essential to preventing criminal activities by compromised personnel.
He also warned members of the public against buying stolen property, stressing that anyone found engaging in the purchase or handling of stolen goods would face the consequences of the law.
The NSCDC Ondo State Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring the safety and security of residents across the state.
