Education: FG Expands Monitoring Committee to Strengthen Industrial Harmony in Tertiary Institutions
FG EXPANDS MONITORING COMMITTEE TO ENSURE IMPLEMENTATION OF AGREEMENTS WITH UNIONS
The Federal Government has expanded the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) to strengthen oversight of agreements reached with organised labour and promote industrial harmony across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
According to the statement released by Boriowo Folasade, Director, Press and Public Relations said the initiative, led by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, is aimed at ensuring the timely fulfilment of government commitments to labour unions while safeguarding teaching, learning and research activities in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking during the inauguration of the expanded committee in Abuja on Wednesday, Alausa said effective implementation of agreements required sustained monitoring, accountability and the prompt resolution of outstanding issues.
He explained that the government had negotiated agreements with 16 labour unions within approximately one year, attributing the achievement to a consolidated negotiation structure that enhanced coordination and institutional memory.
According to the minister, the expanded committee will monitor government commitments, identify obstacles to implementation and refer unresolved issues to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
The committee comprises representatives of the Federal Ministries of Education, Labour and Employment, Justice, and Finance, as well as relevant government agencies.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, urged stakeholders to embrace constructive dialogue and shared responsibility in addressing labour-related concerns.
The Chairman of the Implementation Monitoring Committee, Senator Olarewaju Tejuoso, disclosed that plans were underway to establish five standing Sectoral Implementation Monitoring Committees to address specific concerns within the various sectors and monitor compliance with agreed commitments.
The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening labour relations, preventing disruptions to academic activities and sustaining a stable and productive tertiary education system.
