Education: Most Teachers Rarely Use Instructional Materials To Teach.
By Olusegun HOSEA. 6th , November,2023.

Teachers in most of the Secondary Schools in Ondo State particularly in the Central Senatorial Districts hardly used instructional Materials to concretized learning. This was revealed during the ongoing exercise of the on-the -spot assessment cum Evaluation embarked upon by the Staff of Federal Education Quality Assurance Service, a department from the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja who’s core mandate was to carried out evaluation of the Schools that are below Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

It was discovered during this exercises that most teachers do not used instructional Materials through out their lessons periods to teach the Learners in order to concretized learning. According to the reports , one of the effects of the Instructional Materials was to let the contents of the teaching and learning retain in the memory of the learners for a long period of time.

When asked , reasons why most of the Teachers were not make use of this material?, their response was that they do not have money in some cases to get the Instructional Materials to be used in carry out their teaching and learning. But the Evaluators who were on the field to monitor the teaching and learning activities made them to understand that they don’t need to use money in most cases to buy instructional Materials as they could improvised rather than buying expensive materials to be used for the purpose.

In another, development, most of the school, particularly the Private owned schools are not using the current National Curriculum owned by the government as most of them were still using the one prepared by the Stakeholders of the Private School Association in Nigeria. The library were available in most of the schools owned by the government and some private schools but they were not equiped with the relevance textbooks and this is not encouraging the Learner’s to carry out thorough reading while they were on break or during the scheduled time for library period as there are no books in most of these libraries for them to read for further learning. In some cases where they are book, most of the books were obsolete.

Learners, most of the time do not have personal recommended textbooks where they could further carry out independent learning on the topic thought by their teachers. This cases are more prevalent in most of the public schools compared to that of the Private owned schools.

Assignment are seldomly giving in most of the public schools to further extend learning because of the large population in most of these schools and Teachers are not disposed to this most at time due to the fear of large number of the learner’s notebook that they want to marked. Therefore, they rarely gave out assignment to their learners particularly in the subjects like English Language and Mathematics that all the learners are doing.

Learners notebooks were not checked, marked for corrective feedback in some cases and the effect of this was that most learners do copy wrong spellings and sentences inside their notes
