President Samia’s South Korea Visit to Seal $2.5 Billion Deals, Propel Tanzania’s Economic Transformation
By Adonis Byemelwa

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has arrived in South Korea for a pivotal six-day state visit, set to witness the signing of various bilateral agreements. She landed in Seoul at 6 PM local time (noon Tanzanian time), poised to commence her official itinerary on June 1, 2024. On June 4 and 5, she will also take part in the Korea-Africa Summit, a significant gathering of African leaders.
Accompanying President Samia are prominent Tanzanian officials, including Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Nape Nnauye; Minister of Industry and Trade, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji; and Minister of State for Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo.
Also present are the Minister of State from the President’s Office in Zanzibar, Dr. Saada Mkuya, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Natu Mwamba.
During this visit, Tanzania and South Korea will sign multiple cooperation agreements valued at approximately $2.5 billion. These agreements will enhance bilateral relations that have flourished for 32 years, spanning the education, health, and infrastructure sectors.
One of the highlights of President Samia’s visit will be her receipt of an honorary doctorate from the Korea Aerospace University, marking her fifth honorary degree from international and Tanzanian institutions.
The agreements set to be signed include a memorandum of understanding between Tanzania’s Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) and South Korea’s Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources.
This partnership will focus on research, mapping, resource management, and laboratory activities. Other agreements will cover blue economy development, recognition of seafarer certificates, and establishing an economic cooperation dialogue.
Tanzania and South Korea, both on the brink of independence around the same time in the early 1960s, present a study in contrasts. While South Korea has become the world’s 10th largest economy with a GDP of over $1.6 trillion, Tanzania’s GDP stands at approximately $71 billion. This stark difference highlights the divergent paths these nations have taken.

South Korea’s remarkable transformation from a war-torn country to a technological and economic powerhouse offers valuable lessons for Tanzania. For Tanzania, this cooperation opens doors to advanced research, cutting-edge technology, and improved infrastructure—key ingredients for accelerated growth.
The partnership between these two nations could be transformative for Tanzania. South Korea’s investments in education, health, and infrastructure signal a deep commitment to mutual growth.

The collaboration in the blue economy is particularly promising, offering Tanzania a pathway to harness its vast marine resources sustainably. This sector alone could significantly boost Tanzania’s GDP and create numerous job opportunities.
As President Samia engages with South Korean leaders, the spotlight is on potential breakthroughs that could steer Tanzania onto a path of robust development.
These agreements symbolize diplomatic goodwill and a strategic partnership with the potential to reshape Tanzania’s economic landscape.
Leveraging South Korea’s expertise to combat systemic challenges and drive sustainable development, the impact of this visit could be a pivotal chapter in Tanzania’s journey toward economic resurgence.
The blue economy, encompassing sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems, is particularly significant for Tanzania.
With its extensive coastline and rich marine resources, Tanzania stands to gain immensely from this collaboration. South Korea’s advanced maritime technology and sustainable practices could help Tanzania unlock the full potential of its blue economy, driving economic growth and creating jobs in coastal communities.
The agreements between Tanzania and South Korea also include initiatives to improve educational and healthcare systems in Tanzania. South Korea’s expertise in these areas could lead to significant improvements in Tanzanian institutions, providing better opportunities for Tanzanians and enhancing the overall quality of life.
The cooperation in the field of geology and mineral resources is set to boost Tanzania’s mining sector. By adopting

South Korea’s advanced technologies and practices, Tanzania can improve its resource management and increase the efficiency of its mining operations.

This partnership is expected to lead to more sustainable mining practices, ensuring that the benefits of Tanzania’s mineral wealth are realized for generations to come.

In addition to economic and technological benefits, the visit underscores the importance of diplomatic relations and mutual respect between nations.
President Samia’s receipt of an honorary doctorate from the Korea Aerospace University is a testament to the strong ties between Tanzania and South Korea.
It highlights the recognition of Tanzania’s leadership and its commitment to fostering international cooperation.
The visit progresses with all eyes glued on the outcomes of the high-level discussions and the implementation of the signed agreements.
The success of this visit could pave the way for further collaborations, enhancing Tanzania’s development prospects and strengthening its position on the global stage. The potential for positive change is immense, and the visit marks a significant step towards a brighter future for Tanzania.
