WORKSHOP ON JOLLY PHONICS BEGINS IN LAFIA.

A- 3 day workshop on jolly phonics for 500 primary 1 and 2 teachers has kicked off at Ta’al Model Primary School in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

The workshop which drew participants from the 13 Local Government and Development Education Authorities in the state was declared opened by the Executive Chairman , Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board, Hon. Muhammad Musa Dan’azimi ( Barayan Daddare) who was represented at the occasion by the Director, Teachers Professional Development of the Board Mrs Laraba Dan’azimi Ejim.

She said the objectives of the Programme include the training of Primary School Teachers and Headteachers to be able to effectively teach literacy using the synthetic phonics.

Laraba counselled participants at the workshop to participate actively in the proceedings so as to justify Government’s huge investment in the education sector.

She also commended the special attention and enthusiasm of the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State and the Executive Chairman, Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board towards the overall success of the Programme in Nasarawa State.

Laraba, promised that the Teachers Professional Development Department, Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board and Universal Learning Solutions Initiatives will undertake after workshop visit to selected teachers schools to assess the impact of the workshop.

” on your return to your respective Local Government and Development Education Authorities, I challenge you to pass on the knowledge acquired here to your subordinate. But I most importantly, urge you all to put in your best and participate actively in this workshop so that you will be fully prepared for the challenge i have posed to you ” she said.

Jolly phonics is a brand name for synthetic phonics methods for teaching reading and writing. The method is blend with songs, actions and stories in introducing 42 letter sounds that form the foundation of reading in English.

The workshop jointly sponsored by the Universal Learning Solutions Initiatives(USLI), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Abuja and Coordinated by Teachers Professional Development Department, Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board with resource persons drawn from the Universal Learning Solutions Initiatives, Abuja.

The training commences simultaneously in the 5 centres of the state.
