Profile of Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams: A Detribalised Patriot and Dedicated Public Servant

Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams, known fondly as “The Youngest,” was a trailblazing politician, sports administrator, and philanthropist in Nigerian public life.

His journey from the football field to the halls of parliament touched the lives of many.

Born on April 16, 1985, to a family bridging Nigeria’s ethnic and religious divides – his father, a Hausa/Fulani Muslim; and his mother, an Igbo Christian; from Anambra State. Ekene grew up in Kaduna.

He was deeply influenced by the diversity and resilience of his community. Although he shared the same faith as his mother, his siblings practised different religions. Ekene took this a step further by marrying a Yoruba woman, thereby solidifying his ‘Wazobia’ status and creating a harmonious blend of cultures in his own family.

His early passion for football propelled him into a successful career as a professional player after his secondary school education, notably with Ranchers Bees in Kaduna.

His transition into sports administration marked a new chapter, where he founded Kada City Football Club in 2018. Despite financial challenges, his leadership saw Kada City FC achieve unprecedented success, winning the Nigeria National League (NNL) promotion playoff and earning a spot in the prestigious Nigeria Premier League.

In 2021, he was appointed General Manager of Remo Stars Football Club, fondly known as ‘the Sky Blue Stars,’ based in Ogun State. Under his leadership, the club achieved a remarkable feat, securing promotion to the top tier of Nigerian football and earning a coveted spot in the CAF Confederation Cup..

Beyond sports, the commitment of Rep. Adams, who described himself as “The Messenger whose identity is the people,” to public service and community development was equally profound. He entered politics with a determination to serve, contesting elections in pursuit of representing his constituents with integrity and dedication.

In 2021, he was a Chairmanship Aspirant for Chikun Local Government Council, Kaduna State, under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His eventual election to the House of Representatives in 2023 under the Labour Party, particularly after a previous attempt in 2019, was a testament to his unwavering support among the people he served. His 2023 electoral triumph was a resounding achievement, as he successfully ousted a ranking legislator and Principal Officer in the House of Representatives.

Notably, his victory marked a hat-trick of sorts, as he became the third football administrator to secure a seat in the National Assembly in the 2023 general elections, cementing his place in history.

In parliament, Rep. Adams chaired the House Committee on Sports and was a member of several other Standing Committees. As Chairman, he played a pivotal role in advocating for policies to enhance sports infrastructure and support for athletes across the federation, including working to secure funding for the Paris Olympics.

Rep. Adams’ efforts extended beyond sports, as he championed initiatives aimed at community empowerment, including electrification projects and vocational training through his foundation, ‘Ekene Abubakar Adams Foundation.’ His “Skills to Wealth Initiative,” aimed at fostering economic independence among vulnerable groups, and “Let’s Get Empowered” Programme collectively stand as a testament to his commitment to inclusive development.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, described Ekene as a devoted public servant, distinguished football administrator, and club owner. “His remarkable journey and steadfast commitment to progress have left a lasting impact on the country,” he added.

Rep. Adams was well-loved by all members of the 10th Assembly, admired for his integrity, kindness, and dedication. His impact transcended legislative chambers and football fields.

He was a devoted family man, survived by his loving wife and three children, who were his constant source of strength and inspiration. Throughout his life, Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams exemplified the values of unity, fairness, and service.

His legacy endures as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us of the transformative power of leadership driven by compassion and dedication to the common good.

Tragically, his life of service and dedication was cut short on July 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with health challenges. His passing leaves a void in Nigerian sports, politics, and philanthropy, but his legacy will forever be cherished and remembered.

Let us continue to uphold his ideals and strive for a Nigeria where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the country’s progress.

Rest in peace, Representative Ekene Abubakar Adams. Your spirit lives on in the lives you touched and the dreams you inspired.

*Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr.*
House Spokesman
