Ihembe: Edwin Yodas’ Inspiring Journey as an Agent for Change Through Collective Action

In Tanzania, a remarkable transformation is taking place within various communities as they shift their focus from traditional contributions primarily for weddings and funerals to investing in education and supporting individuals in need.
One exemplary initiative driving this change is Ihembe Agents for Change, a WhatsApp group that began several years ago and has since evolved into a platform for collective action and support. This assembly embodies a commitment to improving lives by prioritizing education, which its members believe is key to breaking the cycle of poverty in Tanzanian households.
At the heart of this initiative is the inspiring story of Edwin Yodas, a young man born in Kibogweizi village in Karagwe. Edwin’s upbringing was marked by struggle; his parents are unable to support the family adequately, living in challenging conditions that many in the community can relate to.
As the firstborn in a family that includes younger siblings, Edwin faced significant obstacles throughout his education, often relying on piecemeal arrangements just to attend secondary school.
His journey was further complicated by the limited assistance available, including support from a local Catholic priest, who could only offer so much in the face of overwhelming challenges.
Recognizing Edwin’s plight, Joram Nkunda, a dedicated member of the Ihembe Agents for Change, took it upon himself to advocate for Edwin’s education. Joram understood that without further support, Edwin’s dream of pursuing higher education might slip away.
He worked tirelessly within the group to highlight Edwin’s situation, galvanizing members to contribute the funds and resources necessary to ensure that this bright young man could continue his education. Joram’s commitment exemplifies the spirit of the Ihembe Agents for Change, showcasing how collective effort and community solidarity can help individuals rise above their circumstances and achieve their aspirations.
Despite the many hurdles he faced, Edwin’s determination never wavered. He persevered through secondary school, demonstrating resilience and commitment to his education. Thanks to the advocacy of Joram and the support of the Ihembe Agents for Change, Edwin is now on the path to higher education, equipped with the resources and encouragement he needs to succeed.
This initiative not only transforms individual lives but also strengthens the community as a whole, fostering a culture of support and empowerment for future generations.
The turning point came when the Ihembe Agents for Change group learned about his situation. This group, composed of Ihembe natives and those connected to the community, had already established a framework for assisting members in times of need.
Initially focused on providing aid during social events like funerals and weddings, the group recognized the broader implications of their contributions. They began to embrace a more proactive approach, addressing critical issues such as education and poverty. This shift in focus underlines a growing awareness among Tanzanian communities that investing in education can yield significant long-term benefits.
When Edwin’s circumstances were brought to the group’s attention, members sprang into action. They quickly mobilized resources and funds to support his education. Through their collective efforts, they managed to raise over Sh 1,000,000 to cover Edwin’s tuition fees at the Tengeru Institute of Community Development (TICD), along with registration fees, accommodation, and health insurance. This financial support was a significant milestone, allowing Edwin to transition from the uncertainty of secondary school to the promising horizon of higher education.
Nevertheless, challenges remained. While most of his tuition fees and living expenses were covered, Edwin was still responsible for a balance of Sh 150,000 to finalize his tuition. Additionally, he faced daily living expenses, with food costs amounting to Sh 3,100 per day. The Ihembe Agents for Change group recognized that their support would need to be ongoing to ensure Edwin could focus solely on his studies rather than financial burdens.
In a remarkable show of solidarity, the group organized additional fundraising efforts specifically to meet Edwin’s needs. They committed to providing support for his daily meals and addressed the urgent requirement for a smartphone, which would significantly aid him in his studies and enable better communication with his peers and professors.
Reflecting on this life-changing support, Edwin expressed profound gratitude to the group. “I never imagined that so many people, most of whom I hadn’t even met, would come together to help me achieve my dreams,” he shared. “This support has given me hope and the opportunity to focus on my studies without the constant worry of financial strain.” His words reflect not only his journey but also the potential of collective action to transform lives within the community.
As of October 24, 2024, Edwin has officially reported to the Institute of Community Development, ready to embark on this new chapter of his life. The dedication of the Ihembe Agents for Change group has not only helped him secure a place in higher education but has also fostered a sense of community and purpose. They understand that their collective efforts can pave the way for future generations and create lasting change within their community.

One shining example from Tanzania is the story of Antony, a young boy from Kagera. In 2018, at just eight years old, Antony made headlines when he courageously convinced his father not to sell their family land, a move that would have jeopardized their future.
His determination caught the attention of a benefactor, the director of Amani Hills Primary School, who stepped in as a sponsor. Thanks to this support, Antony completed his education and has become a symbol of hope, echoing the values championed by the Ihembe Agents for Change. As Isiaka Msuya, Antony’s sponsor, noted, “Investing in our youth is investing in the future of our community.”
His words resonate deeply with the mission of Ihembe Agents for Change, reinforcing that when we come together to uplift one another, we create a ripple effect that empowers not just individuals but entire communities.
