Project Aims to Empower Women and Youth, Transform Region into Agricultural Hub

By Exponent News Akure, 28th March, 2025.

The Ondo State Government has taken a bold step in revolutionizing agriculture in the Southern Senatorial District by acquiring 10,000 hectares of land in Akotogbo and Iyansan. This vast land will serve as the foundation for a groundbreaking agricultural initiative, aimed at empowering women and youth while promoting sustainable farming practices.

Announced by Mr. Wemimo Akinsola, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Agriculture and Agribusiness, the project will focus on various stages of agricultural production, including cultivation, processing, packaging, and marketing.

Partnering with the Commonwealth Women’s Network, the $200 million initiative is designed to drive industrial-scale agriculture in the region, benefiting smallholder farmers and large-scale investors alike. Akinsola highlighted that the selected land is well-positioned with access to water, critical for farming, and is strategically located near the planned seaport and existing airport, paving the way for future exports.

In addition to transforming the land into a major agribusiness hub, the project is set to employ over 3,000 workers, primarily farmers, creating opportunities for growth and improving productivity. Mr. Niba Louis, Cabinet Director of the Commonwealth Women’s Network, assured that the project will include funding, technical expertise, and training to make farming more accessible and sustainable.

Local farmer Mr. Shola Adeniyan expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, encouraging fellow farmers to seize the chance to make the best use of the available land. With this initiative, Ondo State is positioning itself as a key player in Nigeria’s agribusiness sector.
