Nigeria  Police Prioritize Intelligence Training in Security Overhaul

By Exponent News Akure 29th April

In a renewed push to combat security challenges across the country, the Nigeria  Police Force has launched a strategic intelligence training program aimed at equipping officers with critical skills in data gathering and analysis.

Speaking at the training session on April 29, the Commissioner of Police , Wilfred Olutokunbo, talked about Intelligence and emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to intelligence, citing personal experience and institutional gaps. “When I arrived, system analysis revealed there was virtually nothing like intelligence. We’re laying a long-lasting foundation that will outlive our time here,” he stated.

The initiative aligns with the broader agenda of Inspector General of Police Adeola Egbetokun, who recently visited the UK to revamp the Force’s Intelligence School. According to the Assistant Commissioner, the program targets constables and corporals, transforming them into intelligence operatives capable of producing daily reports via dedicated communication channels. Officers are also expected to leverage smartphones for real-time intelligence submission.

“Training is the catalyst of professionalism,” he added, highlighting that the effects may not be immediate but will have enduring impact. He urged divisional police officers (DPOs) and participants to value the investment, stating, “Millions have been spent. We cannot afford to let that go to waste.”

The program, which builds on previous crime mapping initiatives, is seen as a strategic effort to counter spontaneous and unpredicted threats, ensuring that officers can respond proactively.

In another development ,the ACP Feronica said” In a determined push to enhance the fight against crime, the Nigeria Police Force has commenced a basic intelligence training program for officers across all divisions and formations within the command. Speaking during the session on Tuesday, ACP Veronica Ame-Akwa, the Area Commander for Ogba, Lagos, emphasized the critical role of intelligence in modern policing, declaring, ” she explained that “Intelligence is key to all police operations.”

The training, according to ACP Feronica, is designed to equip officers with foundational tools in intelligence gathering, report writing, and the core duties of intelligence operatives. She noted that these skills are essential in unraveling complex criminal cases, particularly in an era marked by a surge in violent crimes such as kidnapping.

“We are going to equip them with tools that will make them achieve success in addressing all forms of crimes and criminality,” she said confidently. “I am very optimistic because intelligence never fails—it aids a lot of operational successes.”

Drawing from over a decade of experience in the intelligence department, ACP Feronica recounted a notable case from her tenure as the head of intelligence for the Lagos State Police Command. “One very remarkable operation was the Bardo case. We used intelligence, and today, Bardo is history,” she stated, expressing hope that similar results will be replicated in other states.

The training initiative underscores the police force’s commitment to proactive and informed crime-fighting strategies, aiming to empower officers with the competence to tackle emerging security challenges effectively.

Participants Share Expectations from Intelligence Training Program

As police officers undergo intensive intelligence training, participants have shared their thoughts on why they are part of the program and what they hope to achieve. Corpora Oluwole Seun, from the Enowa Division in Odu, explained that his primary motivation for attending is to enhance his knowledge in intelligence gathering, emphasizing its importance in policing. “I am here to acquire more knowledge and intelligent training,” he said. “My expectation is to build on what I’ve been taught and apply it effectively when I return to my division.”

Oluwole, who has previously undergone training, expressed his desire for further refinement. “I’ve been trained once, but I want to retrain to ensure I can better contribute to ensuring peace through intelligence gathering,” he noted.

Another participant echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the critical role of intelligence in successful policing. “Intelligence gathering is key to security work,” said Oluwole. “Before any operation, it’s essential to gather intelligence thoroughly to ensure success.” His hope is that the training will further equip him with the tools needed to improve security in his domain and assist in effective crime-fighting.

These officers’ enthusiasm underscores the growing recognition within the force of how crucial intelligence is in tackling contemporary security challenges. The training promises not only to enhance their skills but also to contribute to the larger effort of ensuring public safety.
