NOA Urges Calm, Caution as Ondo Govt Intensifies Investigation into Persistent Odour in Akure
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ondo State Directorate, has urged residents of Akure and other affected communities to remain calm and exercise necessary caution over the persistent offensive odour being experienced in parts of the state capital.
The Agency’s call follows concerns raised by residents over the unpleasant odour, which has reportedly persisted for several weeks in some parts of Akure, causing discomfort among members of the public.
The Ondo State Government, through the Ministry of Environment, has commenced investigations into the development and constituted a team of professionals and environmental consultants to determine the nature and source of the odour.
According to the latest update from the Ministry, preliminary findings have ruled out the Ala River as the source of the odour, while indications point to air pollution arising from the release of certain organic compounds into the atmosphere. Investigations are, however, continuing to conclusively identify the specific compounds involved and their source.
In view of this, the NOA advises residents in areas where the odour is particularly intense to limit their exposure and consider wearing appropriate nose/face masks as a precautionary measure, especially when outdoors or when the odour becomes pronounced.
Residents are also advised to avoid unnecessary panic, remain calm and continue their legitimate daily activities while awaiting further official information from the relevant authorities.
The Agency further urges members of the public to promptly report any suspected illegal waste disposal, unusual emissions or other environmental violations to the Ondo State Ministry of Environment, as such information could assist the ongoing investigation.
The NOA commends the Ondo State Government for its intervention and ongoing efforts to identify the source of the pollution and address the situation. The Agency assures residents that relevant government authorities are actively engaged in finding a lasting solution to the problem and safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of the people.
The NOA therefore calls for cooperation, vigilance and responsible information sharing, urging residents to rely on verified information from government authorities and avoid spreading unverified claims capable of creating unnecessary fear and anxiety.
The Agency reiterates its commitment to keeping the people adequately informed and mobilising them to support government efforts towards maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment in Ondo State.
