Police Nab Two Suspected Drug Traffickers with 51 Bags of Indian Hemp in Ondo

By Exponent News, Akure | June 19, 2025

In a major breakthrough against illicit drug trafficking, the Ondo State Police Command on Wednesday arrested two suspected drug peddlers and recovered 51 bags of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp during an early morning operation along Ikare Junction in Owo.

The suspects, Usman Bashir (27) and Usman Muhammad (17), both from Kaduna State, were intercepted by operatives of the Tactical Intelligence Response Squad (TIRS) at approximately 9:50 a.m., following credible intelligence about their movements.

Each of the confiscated bags is estimated to weigh around 9 kilograms, making the total haul a significant blow to illegal drug distribution networks within the region.

The arrest is part of a renewed crackdown on drug-related crime, following directives from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, to dismantle criminal enterprises fueling cultism and other violent crimes.

Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, praised the swift response of the TIRS team and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring public safety by rooting out organized criminal activities.

“The suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing to expose the larger syndicate behind the trafficking operation,” the PPRO said.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, as the police continue to pursue and dismantle threats to peace across the state.
