NUJ Holds Inaugural NEC Meeting, Sets New Agenda for Journalism Practice, National Security, and Unity

By Exponent News, Akure | 23rd June, 2025

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom, national security, and professional ethics, as it concluded its inaugural National Executive Council (NEC) meeting under the leadership of Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi in Abuja.

Held on Saturday, 21st June 2025, at Josto Apartments and Suites, the meeting brought together members of the Central Working Committee, State Council Chairmen, and Secretaries from across the country.

In a communiqué signed by National Secretary, Achike Chude, and other members of the drafting committee, the NEC outlined several resolutions aimed at strengthening journalism practice, enhancing national unity, and addressing insecurity.

Key Highlights from the NEC Meeting:

Professional Development: The Council endorsed plans to upgrade the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) to issue a broader range of professional certificates, aimed at enhancing capacity building in the media industry. Journalists were urged to prioritize ethical conduct, especially in sensitive areas like cybercrime reporting.

Combating Impostors: NEC condemned the rise in impersonation by non-journalists using fake press credentials and called on security agencies and the public to identify and report such individuals.

Vacant Positions and Elections: NEC inaugurated newly elected State Council leaders and received nominations for vacant positions, including National Auditor, Zonal Trustees, and Ex-Officio roles in the Central Working Committee.

National Security Concerns: The NEC expressed grave concern over increasing insecurity across Nigeria, urging the Federal Government to direct security agencies to prioritize the protection of lives and property. It also called for urgent action on national infrastructure, especially the rehabilitation of critical federal highways.

Agricultural Support and Economic Growth: The Council advocated for increased government support for farmers through the provision of adequate inputs, in order to boost food security and stimulate economic development.

Internal Disciplinary Actions: NEC deliberated on allegations of gross misconduct against Delta State Council Chairman, Churchill Oyowe, and Secretary, Victor Sorokwu. It resolved that they must tender unreserved apologies to affected parties and work towards restoring unity in the council within one week.

Support for Leadership and Press Freedom: The Council praised the national leadership for securing the release of journalists detained in Ogun, Kwara, and Lagos States. A unanimous vote of confidence was also passed on Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi and the Central Working Committee for their “visionary leadership and commitment to union unity.”

Celebrating a Milestone: NEC members celebrated the historic 70th Anniversary of the NUJ, recognizing the Union’s long-standing contribution to democracy and good governance in Nigeria.

As the Union charts its course for the future, the NEC called on government authorities and stakeholders to collaborate in tackling the root causes of insecurity, including poverty and unemployment, while reinforcing the critical role of the media in national development.
