10 Illegal Immigrants Arrested in Akure

By Exponent News, Akure
3rd August, 2025

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have apprehended ten foreign nationals in Akure over suspected human trafficking and illegal entry into Nigeria, in what authorities describe as a serious breach of the nation’s immigration and anti-trafficking laws.

The suspects were arrested on 31st July 2025 at about 2:30 p.m. during a coordinated operation along Oda Road, Akure. Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals had illegally smuggled themselves into Nigeria from the Republic of Benin. While some were found in possession of expired international passports, others had no valid travel documents at all.

The police disclosed that the group was also involved in a trafficking scheme where they conspired to bring a 27-year-old male victim into Nigeria under false pretenses. The victim was reportedly lured with promises of assistance to start a personal business but was later abandoned by the suspects upon arrival in Akure.

Authorities have described the act as a blatant violation of Nigeria’s immigration laws and the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act.

The case has since been transferred to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for comprehensive investigation and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the victim is safe and currently under the care of relevant authorities, receiving psychological and welfare support.
