Tensions ran high in Ondo Town as a group of irate commercial motorcyclists attempted to carry out jungle justice on a notorious robbery suspect, prompting swift police intervention that averted what could have been a brutal lynching.
The suspect, earlier apprehended for a series of violent motorcycle snatchings, was receiving medical attention under police watch after sustaining injuries during his arrest. However, on 2nd August 2025, a mob of motorcyclists, armed with dangerous weapons, stormed the hospital with the intent of meting out their own brand of justice.
The assailants vandalized parts of the hospital, causing chaos and panic among patients and medical staff. Thanks to the rapid response of police operatives, three of the attackers were apprehended before the mob could reach the suspect. The arrested individuals are currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Akure.
In an official statement, the Ondo State Police Command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards jungle justice and mob violence, warning that no individual or group would be allowed to take the law into their own hands under any circumstance.
Meanwhile, a related tragic incident occurred in Odigbo, where a domestic altercation between two siblings turned deadly. One of the brothers allegedly decapitated his sibling during a fight. Enraged community members launched a retaliatory attack on the suspect, inflicting fatal injuries. He later died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
The police have condemned both incidents, urging the public to report crimes to appropriate authorities rather than resorting to extrajudicial actions.
