Train Coach Detaches on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Causes Panic and Traffic Disruption

By Exponent News Akure, August 7, 2025

There was panic in the Ladipo area of Lagos on Thursday morning after a coach of a moving train suddenly detached from the rest of its compartments along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The incident, which occurred around 8:00 a.m., involved a train traveling from Ogba Ayo in Ogun State to Apapa in Lagos. The rear coach reportedly broke off while the train was in motion, triggering fear among passengers and commuters along the busy corridor.

Eyewitnesses said the detachment caused momentary chaos, halting movement and drawing a crowd of startled onlookers.

“Everyone was shocked by what happened, but thankfully, no lives were lost,” said Oloruntoba Omodele, who witnessed the scene.

The incident caused a temporary standstill in the already traffic-prone Ladipo axis, compounding gridlock on the expressway. Emergency responders were said to have arrived promptly to manage the situation and prevent further disruption.

Though no casualties were recorded, the mechanical failure has reignited concerns over the state of rail infrastructure and transport safety in Lagos.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the coach detachment, but experts are calling for an immediate investigation and stricter maintenance protocols, especially along major urban routes.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and relevant transport agencies are expected to address the issue to reassure commuters of their safety.
