NCC, NSCDC Clamp Down on Pirated Book Distributors in Ondo, Ekiti

Akure, September 3, 2025 —

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ondo State Command, has arrested several bookshop owners allegedly involved in the sale of pirated books in Ondo and Ekiti States.

The operation, which covered Akure, Ondo, and Ado-Ekiti, was carried out in line with Section 44(2) of the Copyright Act, which criminalizes the sale, distribution, or possession of pirated works for commercial purposes.

Speaking after the raid, Mrs. Oke Oluropo, NCC Coordinator for Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, and Ekiti States, praised the professionalism of NSCDC officers who provided security during the exercise. She noted that the commission had also begun inspection of schools and outlets where copyrighted works are sold to ensure compliance with the law.

“This exercise is a statutory function, and with the support of NSCDC, it has recorded huge success. The Commission is determined to rid the system of piracy and protect intellectual property,” she said.

Commandant Oluyemi Ibiloye, the NSCDC State Commandant, reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to protecting both lives and livelihoods through strong partnerships.

“The fight against piracy requires stronger collaboration. Together, we can safeguard intellectual property rights, protect the creative industry, and shut the door against criminal elements exploiting the system,” he stated.

The authorities urged parents, guardians, and the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of piracy to the relevant agencies.
