The National Orientation Agency’s (NOA) Ondo State Director, Mr. James Adekunle, has called for national unity as the essential foundation for peace, development, and strength in Nigeria.

During a public lecture in Akure titled “Bridging the Divide: Fostering National Unity in a Diverse Nigeria,” Adekunle stated that a divided nation is at risk of internal conflicts and weakened institutions. He emphasized that in a country as diverse as Nigeria, unity is a “survival strategy.” According to Adekunle, unity promotes social cohesion and encourages people from various backgrounds to work together toward shared goals.

Adekunle highlighted the NOA’s initiative, the National Values Charter, as a framework for bridging societal divides. He urged Nigerians to embrace shared values such as patriotism, honesty, tolerance, justice, and respect for diversity to strengthen the nation’s unity. The NOA director noted that the President would soon unveil this charter, which gives citizens a sense of belonging and promotes peace among different ethnic and religious groups.

To address regional disparities, Adekunle advocated for targeted investments and inclusive policies to reduce feelings of marginalization. He called for equitable access to infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities across the country, along with fair political representation for all regions and ethnic groups.

Adekunle also urged both traditional and social media to promote narratives that emphasize unity and respect for diversity. He encouraged the media to highlight collective achievements and celebrate national heroes from different ethnic backgrounds to foster a sense of shared identity and purpose.
