NOA Ondo Calls for Eye Health Awareness on World Sight Day

Akure 9th October, 2025

As part of activities to mark World Sight Day 2025, the Ondo State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a public message urging Nigerians to prioritize their eye health. This year’s global theme is “Love Your Eyes”.

World Sight Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the importance of eye health and to promote measures that prevent avoidable blindness. In Nigeria, the NOA is partnering with the National Eye, Ear and Sensory Function Health Programme (NESHP) of the Federal Ministry of Health to spread this vital message.

In a press statement, the Ondo State Director of NOA, Mr. James Adekunle, noted that millions of Nigerians suffer from preventable or treatable eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, and diabetic retinopathy, yet many cases remain undiagnosed due to low awareness and late medical intervention.

The statement emphasized key eye care tips:

“Your eyes deserve care:” Regular eye checks can detect issues early and help prevent avoidable blindness.

Protect your eyes at work: Whether in an office, workshop, market, or on a farm, use proper lighting and wear protective gear where necessary.

Eat for better vision: Incorporate fruits and vegetables such as carrots, oranges, and leafy greens into your daily meals.

Reduce screen time: Give your eyes regular breaks and avoid prolonged exposure to bright screens.

Focus on vulnerable groups: Ensure that school-age children and the elderly undergo periodic vision screening.

Call to Action:
The NOA and Federal Ministry of Health are calling on all Nigerians to take proactive steps to care for their eyes. Citizens are encouraged to adopt safe eye health practices both at work and at home, and to visit the nearest eye clinic for routine eye examinations.

“Let us all ‘Love Our Eyes’ and work towards a Nigeria where no one is left in the dark due to avoidable blindness,” the statement concluded.
