Ondo CP Decries Rising Attacks on Officers, Vows Tough Action Against Assaults

Akure, Nigeria — October 9th 2025

In a strong message to the public, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, has issued a stern warning against the increasing trend of violent attacks on police officers, declaring that such actions will be met with the full weight of the law.

This declaration follows the arrest and remand of three individuals who were allegedly involved in a violent assault on police operatives in the Ijapo Estate area of Akure on October 5, 2025. The suspects — identified as Odimgbe Blessing, Odimgbe Stanley, and one Fred (surname unknown) — reportedly attacked officers responding to a distress call from a commercial motorcyclist.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, the suspects became aggressive even after being taken into custody, displaying behavior consistent with drug influence. They were transferred to the Anti-Cultism Unit for further observation and investigation.

“Preliminary findings, including video evidence, confirmed a brutal and unjustified assault on law enforcement officers carrying out their lawful duties,” the statement read. The suspects have since been charged in court and remanded pending further proceedings.

Condemning the incident, CP Lawal described the attack as “a grave affront to constituted authority” and reiterated his zero-tolerance stance on any form of obstruction or intimidation of police personnel.

At the same time, the Commissioner emphasized accountability within the Force. “Any officer who violates citizens’ rights or engages in misconduct will be appropriately sanctioned,” he said, highlighting that professional conduct and respect for human rights remain central to policing under his leadership.

CP Lawal also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his continued support and strategic leadership, which he said has enhanced operational efficiency and public trust in the police across Ondo State.

He called on residents to remain law-abiding and to support law enforcement by sharing credible information that could aid in crime prevention.
