The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ondo State Chapter, has lauded the Ondo State Government for its ongoing rehabilitation of road signs and installation of new traffic lights across Akure, the state capital.

The Chapter described the initiative as a reflection of practices in well-planned modern cities worldwide, noting that functional traffic control systems are essential indicators of organised urban development and adherence to global road management standards.

According to the NIPR, the social value of the project remains significant, as properly functioning traffic lights enhance the safety of motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. The Institute emphasised that such systems reduce accidents, encourage disciplined driving, and improve the overall well-being of residents and visitors in the capital city.

From an economic standpoint, the project was noted as a strategic investment in mobility and productivity. Efficient traffic management, the Chapter said, minimises travel time, boosts commercial activity, reduces fuel consumption, and supports a more favourable environment for business and security operations. The NIPR added that Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s intervention aligns with broader global goals on infrastructure and sustainable economic growth, as outlined in Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 9.

However, the Chapter urged the state government to complement the infrastructure upgrade with robust public education and sensitisation campaigns. It advised that relevant agencies— including the Ministries of Transportation, Information, and Works, alongside the State VIO and FRSC— should enlighten citizens on proper traffic light usage and road regulations. Without adequate sensitisation, it warned, misuse or ignorance of traffic rules could undermine the initiative.

The NIPR, Ondo State Chapter, reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the administration of Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa to drive awareness programmes that will promote compliance and ensure the long-term success of the project.

E-Signed:
Funmilayo Ikueduranni
Chairman, NIPR Ondo State Chapter

Sunday Olusegun Omosule
Secretary, NIPR Ondo State Chapter
