Police Uncover Self-Kidnap Plot, Arrest Three in Ondo

December, 11th,  2025

Authorities in Ondo State have cracked a self-kidnapping scheme involving three young men who allegedly conspired to deceive family members and extort money under the guise of a kidnapping. The revelation follows an intensive investigation by the Ondo State Police Command, which says the arrests reaffirm its determination to expose even the most disguised criminal plans.

The case began after a distressed informant alerted officers at the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad, reporting that a truck driver, Tobi Oluwatuyi, 22, had been abducted by suspected kidnappers around the Ilu Abo area of Akure. Responding swiftly, operatives of the unit launched a detailed probe to track the supposed abductors and secure the victim’s release.

However, as investigators dug deeper, an unexpected twist emerged. Findings indicated that the alleged victim, Tobi Oluwatuyi, had staged his own abduction with the assistance of two accomplices—Jubril Abu, 20, and Segun Oluwatuyi, 21. Their objective was to fraudulently obtain a ransom of ₦1,500,000, which family members, convinced of a genuine kidnapping, eventually paid.

Further inquiries reinforced the revelation that the incident was entirely fabricated for monetary gain. All three suspects have reportedly admitted to their roles in the scheme. According to the Command, they will be prosecuted once ongoing investigations are formally concluded.

Commending the leadership that continues to strengthen policing efforts nationwide, the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Adebowale Lawal, psc+, mnips, expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM. He noted that the IGP’s consistent support and strategic direction have empowered Commands to detect, prevent, and effectively address criminal activities across the country.

The Commissioner urged the public to promptly report suspicious incidents to law enforcement rather than succumb to ransom demands in kidnap-related situations. He emphasized that paying ransoms fuels criminal operations and undermines ongoing security interventions. The CP assured that the Command is adequately equipped to pursue lawful and tactical approaches that safeguard victims while protecting families from unnecessary financial exposure.

He also issued a stern warning against the increasing practice of self-orchestrated kidnappings, stressing that such acts represent serious offences and will always be uncovered through professional investigative work. Individuals involved in such deceptive conduct, he noted, will face strict legal consequences.

Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to public safety, the Police assured residents that Ondo State will not tolerate criminal activities in any form. Continuous cooperation from the public, the Command said, remains essential to maintaining a secure, stable, and crime-free environment.
