Over 4,500 Students Take OAUSTECH Matriculation Oath as VC Reiterates Zero Tolerance for Cultism
No fewer than 4,500 newly admitted students of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, were on Wednesday formally inducted into the institution, with the university administration reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on cultism and other forms of misconduct.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, issued the warning during the university’s 15th matriculation ceremony held at the main campus in Okitipupa, Ondo State.
Addressing the fresh students, Prof. Ologunorisa cautioned them against cultism, examination malpractice, fighting and other behaviours capable of undermining their academic future. He stressed that OAUSTECH places premium value on character as much as learning, noting that any student found culpable of misconduct would face stiff sanctions, including expulsion.
The Vice-Chancellor urged the matriculating students to approach their academic journey with diligence, discipline and respect for the rule of law, both within and outside the campus. He reminded them that taking the matriculation oath symbolises a binding commitment to uphold the institution’s regulations as outlined in the students’ handbook.
Highlighting the achievements of OAUSTECH alumni, Prof. Ologunorisa said the university’s graduates have continued to excel locally and internationally, with some progressing directly from first degrees to PhD programmes abroad, particularly in the United States.
“Our graduates are our pride, and they are doing remarkably well across the globe. That is the standard we expect you to maintain,” he said, adding that university education demands maturity and collaboration within a community of scholars.
He also advised the students to respect the customs and regulations of the host communities, noting that the university is not yet fully residential. According to him, students must prioritise their safety and adhere strictly to community guidelines, including restrictions on late-night movements.
Reassuring the freshers of the administration’s support, the Vice-Chancellor stated that his office remains open to students facing challenges beyond their capacity to resolve. He encouraged them to aspire to leadership roles in government, academia and industry through hard work and commitment.
Prof. Ologunorisa further noted that the increased student population during his tenure has contributed positively to the economy of the host communities and the Okitipupa metropolis. He appealed to landlords in the area to moderate rent charges in order to reduce the financial burden on parents.
