Media Not Underreporting Insecurity – Adu

By Olusegun Hosea, Akure, 2026.

The state of insecurity in the country has now become worrisome, as kidnapping and the killing of innocent people are still prevalent in our society. While some stakeholders, like Ayo Fadaka a former PDP Publicity Secretary, accused the media of underreporting incidents, this was in reaction to the statement of the guest speaker, Otunba Adu Oluwatayo Moses, who spoke on the theme “Southwest Security Synergy: Amotekun’s Role in Regional Stability and Development”  in Akure.  In his lecture, Otunba Adu  eulogized the performance of security personnel in the country. Adu,  who is a renounced publisher of South West Herald Magazine reacted to the statement made by Ayo Fadaka by countering him that the media had not underreported insecurity in our society at all. According to him, “If not because of the media’s activities in society, there is no way the government could have known that some people had been killed or kidnapped.” He said the Amotekun Corps had been able to reduce insecurity to the barest minimum and had done a great job in securing the lives and property of the people, but they still have some challenges that need to be solved. The Federal Government needs to empowered them with sophisticated weapons to combat the criminals
While Dayo Awude, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in the state, in his opinion said the media was trying its best by reporting issues to the people for the development of society. He said the media is part of society and that people should try to help them in making their job easier in order to help society too. In his words, “The media is very key to the development of any system. When you have a situation where somebody is saying insecurity is underreported, you know the media has a lot to do in helping the system. So you must help the media to help society. When you invest in the media, you are helping society because they are partners in this journey of security in the South West.”
The programme recognized some personalities who had distinguished themselves in their various disciplines with different awards and recognitions by the Chronicle Media Venture.
