The Ondo State Police Command has arraigned three suspects for allegedly defrauding a trader of ₦632,000 through a deceptive Point of Sale (POS) scheme in Akure.
The suspects—Adeyemo Joshua, Opemiposi Olawale, and Oluwashola Blessing—were arrested following a complaint lodged by Mrs. Obadaye Omotola, a trader at Ire-Akari, who reported that individuals posing as customers manipulated her POS transaction.
According to police findings, the suspects gained the victim’s trust under the pretext of purchasing goods before executing a coordinated distraction. During the process, they reportedly swapped her MoniePoint POS device with another while also observing and memorising her Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Investigations revealed that the suspects subsequently used the stolen device to transfer a total of ₦632,000 from the victim’s account into accounts under their control.
Police detectives, acting on intelligence, tracked and arrested the trio, while one accomplice remains at large. Authorities said the suspects have made confessional statements and have since been charged to court and remanded in a correctional facility.
The Command said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect, recover the stolen funds, and uncover any wider criminal network linked to the case.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, urged traders and POS operators to remain vigilant, advising them to keep devices secure, shield their PINs during transactions, and promptly report suspicious activities.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling financial crimes and ensuring the safety of residents across the state.
