President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, as he clocks 100 years on May 11, describing him as a symbol of integrity, principled leadership and unwavering service to Nigeria.
In a statement issued from the State House on Sunday, the President celebrated Fasoranti’s contributions to education, politics and the pro-democracy struggle, noting that the Yoruba leader had remained steadfast in his commitment to justice, good governance and national development throughout his lifetime.
Tinubu said Fasoranti’s disciplined lifestyle, honesty and devotion to noble causes had distinguished him as one of Nigeria’s most respected leaders, adding that his legacies in education and politics continue to inspire generations.
The President highlighted the centenarian’s academic achievements, including studies at University of Ibadan, the University of Hull and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia, as well as his years of service as a teacher and founder of schools in Ondo State.
Tinubu also recalled Fasoranti’s role in the defunct Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria, where he served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State under the administration of late Governor Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983. According to the President, Fasoranti’s integrity and prudence were instrumental in managing the state’s finances during the period.
The President further praised the elder statesman for his resistance against military dictatorship and his leadership role in Afenifere, describing him as the recognised voice of the pan-Yoruba group.
Tinubu noted that despite personal tragedies, including the death of his wife and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, the nonagenarian had remained resilient and committed to national unity and progress.
The President expressed gratitude for Fasoranti’s support and prayers during his presidential campaign, recalling his visit to the elder statesman in Akure before the 2023 election. He said Fasoranti had prayed for his victory and lived to witness his emergence as President.
Tinubu prayed for continued strength and long life for the Afenifere leader, thanking him for his enduring contributions to Nigeria and support for the Renewed Hope Administration.
