The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two persons in connection with the vandalism and theft of electrical cables at the General Hospital in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects include one Promise Godspower, who was accused of breaking into the hospital premises and carting away electrical cables after allegedly damaging electrical installations within the facility, and a security guard attached to the hospital, Pogbara Sigalo, who was arrested over alleged negligence and possible connivance.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the incident was reported on May 6, 2026, by a concerned resident who alerted the police to the activities of the suspect.
The statement noted that detectives were immediately deployed to the scene where preliminary investigations were carried out and evidential materials, including photographs of the damaged installations, were obtained.
Police operatives later arrested the prime suspect following intelligence-led investigations. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime.
The command further disclosed that investigations revealed that the security personnel on duty allegedly abandoned his post at the time of the incident, thereby creating room for the vandalism to occur.
Recovered from the suspects were the stolen electrical cables, while further investigations are ongoing to determine whether other accomplices were involved in the act.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, condemned the destruction of public infrastructure and warned against acts of vandalism, theft and sabotage of government property.
The police commissioner also stressed that security personnel entrusted with public facilities must remain vigilant and uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
He assured residents that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The command urged members of the public to remain security conscious and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
