Fifteen motorists in Ondo State have been arraigned in court for operating vehicles with covered or missing registration number plates as the police intensified the enforcement of a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The Ondo State Police Command said the enforcement exercise, which commenced on June 22, forms part of efforts to improve public safety, strengthen security monitoring, and prevent criminals from using unregistered vehicles to evade detection.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said 15 vehicles operating without valid registration numbers or with concealed number plates were intercepted during the operation.
According to the statement, the vehicles have been transferred to the State Traffic Department, while prosecution of the offenders has begun at the appropriate court.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Felix Ohagwu, said the enforcement drive is not aimed at inconveniencing law-abiding citizens but at strengthening the state’s security architecture.
He noted that vehicles without proper identification pose significant security risks and can be exploited to facilitate criminal activities, making strict compliance with traffic regulations imperative.
The police command urged vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are duly registered and fitted with valid number plates at all times, while also calling on residents to cooperate with law enforcement officers.
The command assured the public that similar operations would continue across the state in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police to promote safer communities and enhance public confidence in policing.
