The police have called for immediate improvements in resources and technology to tackle the increasing wave of sophisticated kidnappings in the region. CP Wilfred Afolabi., a senior police official, emphasized the urgent need for mobility, advanced tracking devices, and live monitoring technology to combat these modern crimes. He criticized relying on outdated methods, which he believes are no longer effective in addressing the current security challenges.

“Kidnapping has evolved into a more sophisticated crime, and we cannot afford to use techniques from the 1970s and 1980s to handle it. We need more resources, including tracking devices, to locate and apprehend perpetrators,” Wilfred stated during a recent briefing.

He pointed out that the rise in kidnappings has led to numerous victims paying hefty ransoms, highlighting the financial burden these criminals impose on families and communities. Wilfred also revealed that several of the suspected kidnappers arrested recently were already on the police’s wanted list for their involvement in previous crimes.

“Some of these suspects have been linked to multiple kidnapping incidents, and this breakthrough in their capture is a major step forward,” he continued.

Addressing questions from the press, Wilfred acknowledged that many of the arrested suspects were not local to the area but had established connections within the community, making it easier for them to carry out their criminal activities. “No kidnapping can succeed without local collaboration,” he explained, urging residents to help authorities by providing vital information to prevent further crimes.

On the recent cult-related violence in Ondo  CP Wilfred Afolabi assured that investigations were ongoing and that the police would soon uncover the full extent of the suspects’ involvement in the killings.

Speaking CP Wilfred Afolabi explained that ” The recent spate of kidnappings in Akure, particularly in the Oke Oge area near the airport, has been a source of concern over the past two weeks. During this period, two farmers and two IT students from a higher institution in the city were kidnapped.

In response, the police have arrested several individuals involved in these criminal activities. The police boss confirmed that the syndicates behind the kidnappings have been apprehended. Investigations revealed that one of the key suspects, identified as Yusuf Suleiman, a 27-year-old male, was arrested through intelligence-led policing.

Additionally, another suspect, Ishaku Abdul, a 40-year-old male, was apprehended by the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad (SAKS) following a tip-off. Abdul, an ex-convict recently released from a correctional center, was suspected by neighbors to be involved in the recent surge of criminal activities in the area. He was arrested at Aladura camp, Oke-Oge, Osi, the location where the kidnappings took place. All these suspects had been on the police wanted list prior to their arrests.

As part of the police’s efforts to improve security, Wilfred reiterated the importance of community cooperation. “We must all work together. Information sharing is key, and anyone withholding critical information is complicit in the crime. The sooner the community gets involved, the safer we will all be,” he concluded, urging citizens to actively report suspicious activities to the authorities.
